Ibn Battuta sets out. The twenty-one-year-old Moroccan leaves Tangier for the Hajj and does not return for twenty-four years, covering perhaps 120,000km across Africa, Arabia, India, Central Asia, China and Iberia. His Rihla is the most extensive travel account of the medieval world.
