Murray publishes the first modern guidebook. John Murray III’s Hand-book for Travellers on the Continent gives routes, distances, currencies, prices and blunt assessments of inns. Karl Baedeker follows in Koblenz, and between them they invent the form — including the star rating, which standardises what people go to see.
