The hippie trail opens. Overland routes from Europe through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal carry a generation of young travellers by bus and hitchhiking. It closes after the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at the end of the 1970s.
