The pilgrim roads to Santiago take shape. Routes across France and northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela develop hospices, waymarking and a badge trade. A twelfth-century manuscript, the Codex Calixtinus, includes a route description that functions as a guidebook, complete with warnings about which rivers are poisonous.
