Herodotus writes the first travel account. The Greek historian travels through Egypt, the Black Sea, Mesopotamia and North Africa and writes down what he sees, hears and is told. Much of it is wrong. It is nonetheless the first surviving attempt to describe foreign places for readers who will not go.
